Hike America Virginia: An Atlas of Virginia's Greatest Hiking Adventures (Hike America)

A+++ I haven't found a hiking book that is better laid out than this one! All hikes have great directions and maps as well as general information for the area. Make sure to get this one.

Reviewer: A reader from Albany, NY United States
Everything, and we're talking every last thing, you will want or need to know about hiking in Virginia. Comprehensive, yet does not overwhelm with information. This feature owes a great deal to the editorial layout. The pages themselves are aesthetically pleasing, with beautiful photos and interesting sidebars, and information is easy to find. No digging through indexes and tables of contents and flipping through endless chapters to find trail information. You can give it a quick read and get all the essentials, or take a little bit more time and peruse the more in-depth accounts of the trails (which are delightful, by the way). Amazon.com

Hiking Virginia's National Forests (Hiking Virginia's National Forests, 7th Ed)

This is the best hiking guide we have come across yet for the George Washington National Forest. If you are looking for secluded hikes with some fantastic scenery you have to try some of the hikes in this guide.

Well written, easy directions with excellent maps. A must have for the GWNF and other Virginia areas!

50 Hikes in Northern Virginia: Walks, Hikes, and Backpacks from the Alleghany Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay

We have hiked many of these and reviews and pics are available on this site. They vary from easy hikes for all ages to the more grueling 3 day hikes. Maps are well laid out and easy to understand.

"A new edition of a popular hiking guide to one of the most pristine mountain regions of the east. From the rugged summits of the Allegheny Mountains to the gentle shores of the Chesapeake Bay, the portion of Virginia that falls north of US 60 has some of the most varied hiking terrain in the Middle Atlantic states. Leonard Adkins, an experienced hiker and outdoor educator, has walked more than 360 miles of the region's most popular trails for this updated second edition." - Amazon.com

Day and Overnight Hikes in West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest

The Monongahela National Forest is a hikers dream. This guide takes you to all the best areas and is filled with extra area info. If you are not familiar with the forest this guide has great driving directs for each hike.

"The heart and soul of wild, wonderful West Virginia, the 900,000-acre Monogahela National Forest is a natural getaway for outdoor enthusiasts of every kind. But the best way to see all "the Mon" has to offer remains by foot. You'll agree with every footfall under the forest's stately cherry trees, passing through valleys of rhododendron where waterfalls roar among misted woodlands. Each trail description offers commentary on what to expect along the way and rates each hike for scenery, trail condition, difficulty, accessibility for children and solitude. Easily carried in your pocket, this book provides directions to more than 30 day hikes and 10 overnight hikes in the Monongahela National Forest. Some classic hikes are included, like High Falls and Seneca Rocks, but most will steer you off the beaten path - where you'll find more solitude and infrequently visited sights. The exceptional beauty and peace of mind found on these hikes just can't be experienced from a climate-controlled automobile." - Amazon.com

Monongahela National Forest Hiking Guide

Over 200 trails in this great guide!

"West Virginia, the Mountain State, lies completely within the Appalachian Mountain system of peaks, knobs, hills, glades and valleys. In the state's east are parallel mountain ridges from the southwest to the northeast. On these ridges and in the gorges and valleys between them are nearly a million acres of the magnificent Monongahela National Forest. The purchase of this land began in 1915, and each day since, the "Mon" has become more of a natural treasure. It's wild and scenic expanse is enhanced with its eastern boundary adjoining the Jefferson and George Washington National Forests." - Amazon.com
